Group Show August 9

i just found out that i will be part of another group show, this one being presented by Paul Vincent Studios. they have recently renovated their space, which is now double the size of the old studio and i for one am excited to see it and have my work shown there. other artists include jaden rogers and megan gulick, both of whom are favorites of mine and have pieces in my (small but growing!) personal collection. this showing is one day only and you def don't want to miss it!

+++++++++++++++

in other news, i'm going to be submitting work to three more group shows for late summer and fall (those submission are as of right now, if i hear of more shows that sound interesting, i will look into those as well. any readers who have suggestions or are looking for artists for shows email me with info at hoosatron@gmail.com). pending selection, i will have details on those showings. stay tuned for that and also pictures of newer work that i've done in the past few months. and in sad news...after much debate and thought...i'm giving up my studio for the next year and getting a roommate. i just can't pay my rent right now (well i can...but there's next to nothing left over at the end) and unfortunately need to to use the extra bedroom to ease my financial burden. at the end of my current lease, i'm going to look into a new place where i can re-establish a studio. i don't anticipate this having an impact on my work except for not being really able to do anything on a larger scale, something i was beginning to experiment with, but as long as i can still create and work on new things, i will be happy regardless.

space invader

this piece is by the street artist, space invader, or simply, invader (http://www.space-invaders.com/) i have been lucky enough to have seen 3 of his raw pieces out in the streets of NYC, and recently had the chance to see some of his newer work in a gallery setting for the first time. Top 10 is currently on display at the jonathan levine gallery in manhatten (along with work by wk interact http://www.jonathanlevinegallery.com/), and this piece is part of the show along with his newer works which are made entirely with rubik's cubes. the entire concept of invader's work is something i just love...to not only give a nod to the past with the obvious 1970s/early 1980s video game imagery (who doesnt' love that, really?), but to literally anonymously "invade" a public space. to transform a wall, a building, a bridge, from something ordinary, to an urban canvas...an art statement right in the middle of the chaos of the modern city. it's such a simple-yet powerful- idea/statement. it was definately nice to be able to go to a specific and planned destination and see it first hand, though something about it felt a bit sterile due to the lack of suprise i feel when i happen upon an invasion out on the street. as mentioned before, i've seen 3 pieces in the street, and i will never forget how excited i was when i randomly looked high up on a building and saw my first one (on wooster street in lower manhatten in 2004). i had read about invader a few months prior but thought i'd never get to see his work first hand. imagine my suprise to see that little "ghost" (as a friend of mine used to call them) peering silently down upon the street below; i took many a friend to see that spot until it was removed. while i certainly enjoyed being able to see invader's work up close and to look at the simple genius at eye level (all of the ones i've seen on the street have been at least 15 feet off the ground), i still love the feeling of almost chasing him to see his work and the shock of suprise i sitll get when i see that tiny bit of magic pop up in the most random of places.

i made this piece when i was upset with someone for being unreasonable and completely unfair to me. i had said everything that there was to be said but was still frustrated until i found myself in my studio beginning to work on this. it flowed out of me in an intense wave and took shape before my eyes. the frustration and annoyance came right out of me and onto the canvas; i felt much better about the situation. as is so often the case with artists, i create as a visual response to the things i feel and experience. the pieces that mean the most to me are usually the ones that were the hardest to make or that i had the most intense experience in making.

i love when i find random things such as this. i smile...that deep satisfying smile of discovery and of a sharing in a special secret with someone (even if its a secret out in plain site and if the person responsible is anonymous most of the time). i often think about the people who view things such as graffiti and street art as ugly and as an annoyance. what amazes them? where do they find wonder in their lives? what is it that drives them?
